Dune {SciFi Friday Series}

October 1, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:30 pm on Friday, repeating until October 29, 2021

In anticipation of next month’s release of a new version of Dune, we will be viewing the best adaptation so far, which you never saw, the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel mini-series. This is not the abomination that was the David Lynch 1984 adaptation, and while production values will be better with the much more expensive 2021 version, it will be hard to stay closer to Frank Herbert’s excellent source book than this faithful mini-series allowed.

This sequence of SciFi Fridays will watch Sci-Fi channel’s Dune and its even better miniseries sequel Children of Dune over three weeks, ending right before the 2021 new Dune theatrical release. For completeness, we will watch — and perhaps mock — an extended version with added transitions of the 1984 David Lynch abomination. It’s supposed to be much better, but we’ll have plenty of popcorn, rotten tomatoes and raspberries on hand, just in case. And then on the last day, we will view the 2021 new release of Dune together, and of course compare and contrast afterwards at SHELL afterparty.

Details: The night before my first-ever college midterm, I took a break in my panicked study to check out Frank Herbert’s novel Dune. 14 hours later, I ran out of my room — late for my midterm — because I had spent an all-nighter reading the novel. (Don’t worry, I still aced the exam!)

You can imagine my excitement when the novel was finally brought to the big screen nine years later, but I was horrified by how the preening Hollywood egoists had ruined what was to me a holy script. It wasn’t until I happened across the DVD version of the SciFy Channel’s miniseries (I still didn’t have cable) in the early aughts, that I finally found a version that did justice to the stories and themes that had so captivated me when I was not able to be captivated.

We will be watching this mini-series, faithful adaptation of Dune, prior to the release of the 2021 movie. The movie will undoubtably have better acting (although, William Hurt in the miniseries? You can’t touch this!) and better production and special effects, but the details and the faithfulness to the incredible story will be unmatched — a mini-series can cover much more than a two-hour movie.

We’ll watch two mini-series (Dune and the better Children of Dune) and we’ll watch an extended and improved version of the David Lynch movie.

And then the last night, Fri Oct 29, we’ll watch the new 2021 Dune movie in the comfort of The SHELL, and compare notes.
