Firefly Friday

July 16, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 11:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:30 pm on Friday, repeating until September 17, 2021

Over the remaining two months of summer 2021, we will marathon arguably the #1 cult science fiction show, FireFly, ending the marathon on the 19th anniversary of it’s doomed debut. (Fox slotted the show in its death slot of Friday evenings, showed the episodes out of order, pre-empted them regularly, and didn’t promote.)

If you haven’t seen it, you should. If have seen it, you should re-see it. Bring insights and connections to the discussion afterwards.

As opposed to many SciFi space shows that assumed utopian centralized political authorities, FireFly takes place in a political environment where the authoritarian government is fascistic and oppressive. Firefly is a small band of anarchists who are simply trying to stay alive, keep moving, and stay outside the authority’s control.

Firefly’s cult following “seems to include a disproportionate number of libertarians.” (Reason Magazine)

“The story themes are often cautionary about too-powerful central authority and its capacity to do bad while being considered by the majority as good. The characters each exhibit traits that exemplify core libertarian values, such as
* the right to bear arms (Jayne, Zoe),
* legal prostitution (Inara),
* freedom of religion (Book),
* logic and reasoning (Simon), and
* anti-conscription (River).

Joss Whedon notes this theme, saying “Mal is, if not a Republican, certainly a libertarian, he’s certainly a less-government kinda guy. He’s the opposite of me in many ways.”” [Wikipedia]

Ranked #5 in TV Guide’s “Canceled Too Soon”.
Ranked #1 in New Scientist magazine’s 2005 poll of “The World’s Best Space Sci-Fi Ever”.
Ranked #11 In 2012 Entertainment Weekly listing as the “25 Best Cult TV Shows from the Past 25 Years”.

Each night we’ll view two episodes, discuss them, and have drinks and chat after.
